Carl Jung's stone mandala was carved at his retreat in Bollingen, to celebrate his 75th Birthday. The house was set on the edge of Lake Zurich. The house can be seen in the picture, right (all the pictures on this page are artistic impressions, based on the scenes shown in the DVD Matter of Heart).
One of Jung's hobbies was stonemasonry and, with the assistance of some builders, he built his own house at Bollingen. Jung used stone from a quarry nearby, but an error was made during a delivery: a large square block of stone was delivered that had not been ordered. Jung instantly took a liking to the stone and decided to keep it to carve on it.
Over a couple of years, Jung spent time during his visits to Bollingen in carving his mandala. On the front face was the mandala, with some symbols and text, and there were inscriptions on other faces (though not all).
Please note: this is my last blog for a while. I'm taking a break to aid with recuperation from my illness earlier this year.
